The Hancock & Wood building has been redeveloped over the years, but it was originally constructed in 1857. Before that, the site on Bridge Street was occupied by 3 small shops as can be seen on the right. Note the rather grand clock at No. 29! King George V and Queen Mary visited Bridge Street on 7th July 1913 - the year before Hancock & Wood was founded. The site of the Hancock & Wood store may be seen on the left hand side. In 1925 Hancock & Wood was a well established business. Even so, it only occupied half of the present shop frontage. Hancock & Wood's store can be seen on the right hand side in this general view of Bridge Street in 1950. Copyright Friths Bridge Street in Warrington has on more than one occasion been said to be one of the finest examples of a Victorian / Edwardian shopping street in Cheshire. Look above street level and some wonderful civic gems are visible. As a result of one improvement scheme, co-ordinated by Warrington Civic Society, Queen Elizabeth II visited Bridge Street in 1968. Many visitors to Warrington will remember when Hancock & Wood had the arcade. This was the store frontage from 1938 through to 1980. . . . . . . and as we are in the 21st Century |
